Mapperley Stud

Mapperley Stud has a strong history of producing class racehorses, and in the past year their graduates Brutal and Rattan carried on that tradition, with Brutal winning the Gr.1 Doncaster Handicap and Rattan the Gr.2 HKJC Sprint Cup.

“Having a Mapperley graduate win a group one race is always a special feeling but to win the feature mile in Australia is simply amazing,” enthused an understandably proud Simms Davison.
“Rattan emerging as one of the leading sprinters in Hong Kong, is really exciting. He went a huge race to run second in the Gr.1 Chairman’s Sprint, we couldn’t be more pleased.
“It’s really important that the farm produces high class horses like these, it’s great for the team at home.
“Rattan is from an old Mapperley family, and we are delighted to be offering a Rageese(AUS) colt out of his half-sister Thyme Lot 354 in Book One this year.
“We are really excited about this year’s draft it’s the nicest draft we have had as far as quality goes; we have 19 in Book One by 11 different sires, and it’s the best draft we have presented, as far as depth of pedigrees goes.”
Mapperley will present 13 colts and 6 fillies in Book One, while in Book Two they have 18 comprising 11 colts and 7 fillies.
Adding to that depth in pedigrees and the variety of sires is Mapperley’s close association with Rosemont Stud and this year they are presenting some lovely yearlings on their behalf.
“That’s a massive commitment and we are thrilled with the quality they represent. They are major shareholders in Tarzino, and he is a sire that is really going to impress this year,” according to Davison.

“There are a couple of Tarzino standout colts with international pedigrees, Lot 319 out of Striving(IRE) and Lot 460 out of Benalmadena(FR). Rosemont have sourced mares from all over the world to support Tarzino, and we are very excited that they are getting behind a New Zealand sire, it’s good for our industry to have these international pedigrees on our farms.”
“They also have two lovely fillies, Lot 676 by Zoustar(AUS) out of It’s All For You(GER). Zoustar(AUS) is absolutely flying at the moment – everyone is keen to get their hands on one, this filly is class all day long. She is a filly that everyone who has come to the farm in the last year has commented on.
“The other filly Lot 676 is by the much anticipated first season sire Maurice(JPN), she is out of Vamoose(JPN) who is a half-sister to Caulfield Cup winner Admire Rakti. She has great Japanese bloodlines and we all know how they have performed this spring in Australia.”
Late spring racing in New Zealand saw last season’s Oaks winner Sentimental Miss return to win the Wanganui Cup, Mapperley will sell her half-brother Lot 134 by Pins(AUS) ex Nostalgic. According to Davison he is exactly the type of Pins(AUS) colt that has sold well over the years, really stamped by his old man.
The win by Yearn in the Gr.2 Dunstan Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes was also welcomed as Mapperley have her lovely half-sister by resident sire Complacent(AUS) in Book Two, Lot 801 out of the Danehill(USA) mare Princess Uno(AUS).
“Complacent(AUS) always served nice books and always had a following, this crop is better than the first. At the Ready To Run Sales in November a couple of colts sold exceptionally well. He also has a lovely colt in Book Two Lot 1037 out of Centapin, he is a little rock star and ticks all the boxes – there is something special about him.
“Our Contributers sold well last year to a wide range of trainers here and in Australia and the reports have been extremely encouraging. Of the colts Lot 562 is my pick, out of the stakes winning mare Due Diligence he is an absolute stunner. His half-sister Ocean Dew won impressively for Richard Freedman recently, and he has such a big opinion of her he will be targeting stakes races with her next prep.
“Another lovely colt is Lot 457 ex Bella Carolina, he is a half-brother to the Wellesley Stakes winner Tennessee. We have some nice fillies to sell, Lot 131 ex Nomisma is a lovely filly a great walker, whereas the Sloane Street filly Lot 288 is a get up and go filly with a great hindquarter, a lovely Guineas type.
We are very excited to present the first yearlings by our resident sire Puccini, a son of Encosta de Lago (AUS), he was a Champion Three-Year-Old, and a dual group one winner. This is a sire line that is going well at the moment, and we are pleased with the colts we are offering.
“The colt in Book One Lot 126 is out of Navy Beach and is a half-brother to stakes place Naval Fleet.
In Book Two he has a lovely free walking colt with a great shoulder Lot 851 (ex Shining Light), who is the spitting image of his old man a real Derby type only slightly bigger, while Lot 846 a filly out of She’s A Cougar, was a standout foal and has been the farm favourite since day one.” ✦
