Presenting the first crop of a resident stallion to the market place is a special time for any operation, but when they are the progeny of a Group 1-winning son of the breed-shaper Deep Impact it goes to another level.
Rich Hill Stud will be in that envious position in January when Satono Aladdin’s youngsters go under the hammer at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale.
Feedback from breeders has been outstanding and on-farm parades in the lead-up to Karaka has fuelled expectations at Rich Hill, who will offer five colts during Book 1 and a further three colts and one filly in the Book 2 session.
“It’s pretty exciting for us to be offering the first crop of Satono Aladdin, a Group-1 winning miler and with a pedigree we believe will be very well-suited to Australasian conditions,” Rich Hill’s John Thompson said. “They are a high-quality line of horses, very athletic and the feedback we have received has been extremely encouraging.”
Satono Aladdin was an outstanding racehorse who won eight times with his career highlight a stunning victory in the Tokyo Yasuda Kinen-G1, in which he blazed over 1600 metres to stop the clock at 1.31.5s.
He was successful on debut as a two-year-old and was Group Three-placed before training on to dual Group Two victories over 1400 metres and also effective over 2000 metres during his career.
Combine his race record with his rich and deep pedigree and the good-looking Satono Aladdin has all the attributes necessary to make his mark at stud.
A NZ$1.7 million foal purchase, he is a brother to the Kyoto Queen Elizabeth Stakes-G1 winner Lachesis, also successful in the Sankei Osaka Hai-G2, and they are out of the Storm Cat mare Magic Storm.
She won three races, including the Monmouth Oaks-G2 and was placed in the Saratoga Spinaway Stakes-G1. Also featuring on the pedigree page is the Del Mar Futurity Stakes-G1 winner Drill.
“When Satono Aladdin was first put in front of me I thought this horse is a real chance and you don’t always think that,” Thompson said. “It was well known that he was one of the biggest finishers in Japanese racing with a phenomenal turn of speed.”
“It was also known that as a racehorse he was such a laid-back dude and he’s an easy horse to have around, he loves New Zealand grass. He’s been popular with breeders and rightly so.”
Among Rich Hill’s leading Satono Aladdin yearlings is Lot 539, a son of Miss Krisdel and the family of Group 1 winners Gee I Jane, Katie Lee and Banchee while Lot 18 is out of Our Lady Gaga with the Railway Handicap-G1 winner Recurring featuring on his pedigree page. Lot 451 is a son of Inthespotlight, who is from the family of top Australian three-year-old North Pacific and the four-time Group 1 winner Metal Bender.
Associate stallion Vadamos is another top-quality act
Vadamos will have six of the best in Rich Hill’s Book 1 consignment and a quartet in Book 2. “They are a quality bunch and his first crop were very well-received by the buying bench and his second crop ticks all the boxes as well,” Thompson said.
At the time of writing, the Group 1-winning son of Monsun had produced 12 Northern Hemisphere first crop two-year-old winners and a Group-performed youngster. “We will be expecting him to get some nice autumn two-year-olds and again the feedback has been great,” Thompson said.
Momentum continues to build for Proisir
Priosir has produced three stakes winners this season and an array of promising gallopers on both sides of the Tasman.
“Riodini has also been Group 1-placed in Australia and he’s had a lot of impressive winners including Kurabui, a half-sister to Surprise Baby, who won on debut for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr,” Thompson said.
“Levante is a hot favourite for the Railway Stakes-G1 and we’d like to think she’s another bound for higher honours and Vitesso Bo is looking another exciting Oaks prospect for Proisir.”
Rich Hill will present a Proisir colt, Lot 550, in Book 1 and he is out of the stakes performer Miss Thorn and a family rich in Group performance while a further five youngster by the son of Choisir will be offered in Book 2.
Shocking completes Rich Hill’s quality roster
Shocking continues to collect staying titles, but without being a one-trick pony. “He’s had a great season and quinellaed the New Zealand Cup-G3, he sired the 2020 Wellington Cup-G3. He also quinellaed the Cromwell Cup and sired the recent Chalmers Handicap winner City Slicker who is another future genuine Cup contender,” Thompson said.
“Elephant is unbeaten and could be a bit special so Shocking is having a great time. There aren’t a lot of stallions in Australasia that can get two-mile winners and he’s building quite a record. His progeny have won a New Zealand Cup, two Adelaide Cups, a Sandown Cup and a Wellington Cup.
“As far as stamina goes, not many can beat him and he’s not a one dimensional stallion by any means. Our stallions have been on a good roll so we’re looking forward to Karaka.”
In Book 1, Rich Hill will offer a half-sister, Lot 288, by Shocking to the Oaks Prelude-Listed winner Sacred Rhythm with the dam a half-sister to the Sandown Stakes-G3 winner Any Rhythm. In Book 2, Lot 720 is a son of Shocking sporting Group 1 winners Xtravagant and Sixty Seconds in his pedigree and a colt, Lot 736, who is out of a half-sister to G3 Gilgai Stakes-G3 winner and Galaxy Handicap-G1 runner-up Fast ‘N’ Famous.
